There is nothing more fun than doing what you genuinely enjoy doing and getting paid for it. Some of these might sound strange to you but trust, you will find something you like. Also, I am pretty sure you have thought “I could get paid to do this” at some point in your life.
There are certainly professionals at these gigs listed below. However, there is always room for a new and different perspective. The luxury in this is that you do not depend on this specific hustle to survive, you are using it to just supplement your current income.
1. Selling Photographs
Are you good at or interested in taking photos and want to make extra money? Then turning your hobby to a side hustle by selling your photos might be right up your lane. Photography companies are always looking for new photos to showcase on their sites, why not sell yours to them? There are websites that sell stock photographs/images. You could sell your images there.
Stock images are generic photos, illustrations and icons created without a particular project in mind. They are then licensed, usually for a fee, to individuals or organizations for use in marketing materials, websites, packaging, book covers and more.
The easiest way to make your photographs available as stock images for sale is by using a third-party micro stock website such as iStockPhoto. Selling your photos through a stock agency like this is quick and easy.
So, get out your camera and take some photos while having fun and upload the photos to earn money.
2. Give Out Music Lessons
This one is for all the musical geniuses out there! If you are great at playing a musical instrument or if you have a great ear for music you can actually teach music. Turn your hobby to a side hustle by offering lessons in your preferred musical specialty. You could do it face to face or online.

3. Do Voice Over Work
So, talking is your hobby, and you are camera shy? But have a nice speaking voice? Ever wonder how much fun it would be to be a voice-over actor? The great thing about being a voice-over actor is that you can do it from almost anywhere. Different companies hire voice over actors for radio, the Internet, also Television to do voice-over work for children’s audio books, cartoons, commercials, and more.
As a beginner, I suggest putting together a voice over demo and you can do that by going to a professional recording studio or by setting it up yourself. If you do it yourself, please make sure to get a great microphone and a set of great headphones.
On the demo, you could record different voices that you can do such as cartoon characters so that the different clients that you audition for can see if you would be a good fit for the role. 4. Become A Part-Time Tutor
Good at teaching? Are you currently a teacher or tutor and looking for part-time work? You can tutor a subject you are good at for a fee. Once I had the opportunity to turn my teaching hobby into a side hustle in my schooling days.
So, I got to tutor 1st year graphic design when I was in my 2nd year of university. Back then, I was making something like R45/hr. The classes took place once a week for 3 hrs, throughout the year. Just do the math! I also got to tutor Mathematics to Matriculants (12th Grade) at R50/day. Even though with this gig I only got booked around examination season, but I still made my coin.
5. Make Videos on YouTube
This one is for the person who enjoys being the “one-man-show”. If you want to be the star, the producer, the editor, the publisher, etc. YouTube is for you. With so many people going on YouTube daily it’s definitely a platform that numerous bloggers, influencers and creatives can make good money. Many paid YouTubers make thousands and even millions just from sharing videos as well as reviews, from music reviews to product reviews and more.
Making money on YouTube is totally possible, however, it is not that instant and easy. Interestingly enough, it is actually the main source of income for many Creatives! So, do consider it.
6. Be a Brand Ambassador/Influencer
Love to mingle and network at different events? If so, becoming a brand ambassador in your town might be a great side job for you! You can work event for companies and get paid for doing so.
Brand Ambassadors are hired to promote the brand in a positive light to the public while providing consumers with a memorable face to face experience. When new events come to town many promotion companies hire brand ambassadors/influencers to help assist them with the different tasks to make sure the events runs smoothly.
7. Event Host/Promoter
In the same way as being a brand ambassador/influencer. If you enjoy being part of events, this is for you. You can get paid to be at events but from the crew side of things. So, all you do is help create a pleasant and inviting atmosphere for event guests and attendees by greeting and providing direction and information.
An event host duties and responsibilities include minor planning, setting up, guest interaction, facilitating activities, supervise food service and support event staff.
8. Manage Social Media for Small Businesses
Do you spend hours and hours on social media? You could be extremely talented in understanding how social media works. So, plenty of small businesses need a social media manager and simply don’t have the time nor the expertise to be constantly posting on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest or Twitter.
Take it upon yourself to also contact local businesses and offer up your services for a contracted monthly fee. You could pick just one or two social media platform that you specialize in, if you cannot do it all. This is also another easy way to make money no matter where you live.
9. Become A Personal Cook
Are you a good cook? So, you could become a personal “chef” and prepare meals for other people. You could also easily market your catering services on social media or even go all out and build yourself a website.
I for one love to cook and this is something I could do. If only I had the time, I would do small intimate event catering. Or simply prepare meals for someone who is lazy or unable to do so themselves. Also, preparing lunch boxes for a fee. It can be as easy as dropping of a cooked meal to your neighbour for a price. The possibilities are endless.
10. Write an eBook
Are you talented in writing? Enjoy Creative writing? Do you enjoy writing short stories? So, here is how you can turn this hobby to a side hustle, you could write eBooks to sell on platforms like KDP and CreateSpace, both by Amazon. It is so easy to find publishers in the eBook market.
11. Review Books
It’s entirely possible for book lovers to make money following their passion for reading. You will not get rich overnight with these gigs though. But if you’ve always wished you could earn money doing something you love and you love reading, you can get paid to read books to make some extra money or work towards a new career. Try sites like Online Book Club and Upwork.
12. Sell Your Artwork
If you are mad talented, in painting, sketching or crafting you can sell your work. Yes, you may have a full-time job that will keep you from mass producing art. But the things you create in your leisure time have massive potential. Art lovers are also always looking for something new and unique to collect. Put your work out there, let people enjoy your gift also make some coin from it.
13. Household Organizing
An unusual one of the hobbies to side hustles ideas for sure. Yes, but I am one of those people who love to organize things, the pleasure of seeing things in order is just amazing. If you enjoy organizing, this could be for you. You could share your techniques and skills with others (for a price obviously) for things like pantry organizing, closet, document, office or garage organizing.
14. Start A Profitable Blog
Lastly, my favourite of the hobbies turned side hustles! Join me if you like and start a blog. Okay, so you won’t make money that fast with a blog. Trust me. But, if you start a blog and deliver enormous amounts of value, you could set yourself up with a platform for a tremendous amount of “passive” income.
This is something you can easily build on the side with just a few hours of work per week, but you need to stay consistent and post great content regularly. I am not making money from my blog YET, but I am building something with a lot of potential.
Blogging is suitable for someone who loves learning and running a business. Because this is one of the most learning I have done with any project. Blogs are for sharing your expertise or experiences creatively so.
15. And Many More…
I could go on all day about the possibilities. Proof reading and editing documents, virtual personal assistant, selling home baked goods, cueing for people, shopping for someone, driving, laundry washing, also babysitting just to name a few. Even listening, some people just need someone to talk to, so if you enjoy it go for it.
Think of something you enjoy doing and always have the time for. Now, take that thing and coin it. Turn those hobbies, chores, passions, interests into side hustles.
