How to Effortlessly Grow Healthy Natural Hair blog post from The LOVELEELERA Blog

So, you want to know how to grow healthy natural hair. You are probably wondering why your natural hair is not thriving or you are being proactive by learning how to grow healthy natural hair before you transition.

Firstly, you must have defined what flourishing means to you. Does flourishing hair mean length, volume, texture, lustre, everything? What are your healthy hair journey goals?

My Hair Journey So Far

In my “The Big Chop” post I make mention on how I kept transitioning from natural to relaxed hair over the years. My hair would look great for a little while and when it stopped looking great, I would transition from one state to another.  I learnt to take care of my relaxed hair and it was healthy for a long while, but when that changed, I then chopped it all off and started again.

After doing the big chop I changed my approach and my natural hair is thriving if I must say so myself.

5 Steps to Help You Grow Healthy Natural Hair

In my view these are the 5 steps to growing healthy hair:

Step 1:  Knowledge

Firstly, you need to gather knowledge about your hair and its behaviour. Learn about what hair type you have, that includes hair texture, porosity, density, curl pattern and more.  For the longest time I also did not know what LOC, LCO, Porosity, Hair Shape, Hair Density etc, meant. As a result of my cluelessness, I was using any product that looked pretty and cool on the shelves. I had to first learn what type of hair I have in order to take care of it accordingly for me to grow healthy natural hair.

Step 2:  Products

Once I knew and understood my hair type, I was then able to select the products I use wisely. Since I want to grow healthy natural hair, I have learned what to look for and avoid in hair products. by obtaining knowledge on my hair I now know which ingredients to avoid as well as look for in the products I use. The focus should be strictly on using products that are relevant to the hair that makes up your crown. This is a trial and error step as every individual has different hair and it will respond uniquely to all the products.

Step 3:  Routine

With knowledge I was able to generate a routine to take care of my crown using the products suitable for the kind of hair I have. You will need to establish a hair routine to grow healthy natural hair. A routine for what steps you will have to take on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Routines for wash day, moisturising, styling including the frequency of those. These routines do not have to be complicated.

Step 4.  Care

If you want to keep something you take care of it. There are habits that you will need to change in order to grow healthy natural hair. The tools that you use, the hairstyles as well as handling of your hair is very important to healthy hair growth.  I have learnt to tell my hairdresser to not pull my hair too tight, to not include my edges in the feed-in breads in addition to not heat blow drying my hair after washing it. I started to speak up for my crown. With time these things become second nature.

Step 5:  Patience

Miracles do happen but some of them take time. Lastly, to grow healthy natural hair, you will need to have patience.  I had to have a lot of patience to monitor how my hair was responding to the products as well as the routines and I made the relevant adjustments consequently. I have been growing my natural hair for a few years now, and trust, I am still making those adjustments.
